International Travel: New Visa Requirements for 2025

Big changes are also coming for U.S. travelers heading to the UK or countries in the Schengen Zone in 2025. These destinations will soon require visas or travel authorizations, so plan ahead!

Traveling to the UK?

Starting last week, January 8, 2025, U.S. citizens will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for short visits, tourism, or business. An ETA is intended as a security and pre-screening measure that allows the government to be more aware of potential threats a traveler may pose before crossing the borders into the UK.

How to apply for the UK ETA:

  • The fastest and preferred way is to apply is through the ETA app on your phone. If you can’t do it from your phone you can apply online from your computer

  • Each traveler must apply individually, including children.

Processing time and cost:

  • Most applicants get a decision in hours, but it may take up to 3 working days (or longer in rare cases).

  • The cost is £10, and the ETA is valid for 2 years. If you get a new passport you will have to apply again for the ETA.

Important notes:

  • An ETA is not a visa—it’s digital travel permission linked to your passport.

  • While the ETA allows you to travel, you’ll still need to clear immigration upon arrival.

  • Be sure to read all the rules and instructions completely. These can change.

For detailed guidance, visit the UK government’s official website to ensure you have everything you need before your trip.
